As believers, we are often tempted to engage in spiritual debates with those who do not share our faith. However, the Bible warns us against arguing spiritual things with ungodly people. In this sermon, we will explore few reasons why we should avoid such debates.
1. Avoid Casting Pearls Before Swine (Matthew 7:6)
"Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces."
This verse reminds us that sharing spiritual truths with ungodly people can be like casting pearls before swine. They may not appreciate or understand the value of what we are sharing.
2. Ungodly People Lack Spiritual Understanding (1 Corinthians 2:14)
"The person without the Spirit cannot receive or understand the things of God, for they are discerned only through the Spirit."
This verse explains that ungodly people lack the spiritual understanding to grasp the things of God. Arguing with them can be futile.
3. Avoid Being Drawn into Foolish Debates (2 Timothy 2:23)
"Don't have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels."
This verse warns us against engaging in foolish debates that can lead to quarrels and strife.
4. Ungodly People May Become Aggressive (Proverbs 29:9)
"If a wise person goes to court with a fool, the fool rages and scoffs, and there is no peace."
This verse reminds us that ungodly people may become aggressive and hostile when confronted with spiritual truths.
5. Arguing Can Lead to Sin (Proverbs 10:19)
"Sin is not ended by multiplying words, but the prudent hold their tongues."
This verse warns us that arguing can lead to sin, particularly the sin of pride and anger.
6. Focus on Sharing the Gospel, Not Arguing (1 Corinthians 2:2)
"For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified."
This verse reminds us that our focus should be on sharing the gospel, not arguing with ungodly people.
7. Ungodly People May Not Be Open to the Truth (Matthew 13:13-15)
"This is why I speak to them in parables: 'Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.' In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: 'You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.'"
This verse explains that ungodly people may not be open to the truth, and arguing with them can be pointless.
8. Arguing Can Damage Our Witness (1 Peter 3:15)
"But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect."
This verse reminds us that arguing can damage our witness and make it harder for others to receive the gospel.
9. Focus on Building Up Believers, Not Arguing with Ungodly People (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
"Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing."
This verse reminds us that our focus should be on building up and encouraging fellow believers, rather than arguing with ungodly people.
10. Ungodly People May Use Our Words Against Us (Matthew 22:15-22)
"Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words."
This verse warns us that ungodly people may use our words against us, and arguing with them can be counterproductive.
11. Arguing Can Lead to Pride and Arrogance (Proverbs 13:10)
"Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is found in those who take advice."
This verse warns us that arguing can lead to pride and arrogance, which can damage our relationships and our witness.
12. Focus on Demonstrating God's Love, Not Arguing (1 John 3:18)
"Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth."
This verse reminds us that our focus should be on demonstrating God's love through our actions, rather than arguing with ungodly people.
13. Arguing Can Be a Distraction from Our Mission (Matthew 28:18-20)
"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."
