Summary: Exposition Psalm 2

Psalm 02 | Kiss the Son

Introduction:

• The 1st Messianic Psalm (The NT ascribes authorship to David in Acts 4:25-26)

• This Psalm is about the kingdom of God and the kingdoms man sets up.

Verse 1 | Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?

• The Psalmist questions the purpose and the motivation of people who try to establish their kingdom (way of life).

Verses 3-4 | “Let us break their chains” they cry, “and free ourselves from slavery to God. But the one who rules in heaven laughs…” (NLT)

• Our (sinful) hearts are bent towards a life that is independent of God.

• Those who want to live independently see the life that God offers as a form of slavery.

• God laughs at those attempting to bring God’s kingdom to and end. (Verse 4)

John 18:36 | My kingdom is not of this world,” said Jesus. “If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight, so that I wouldn’t be handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.”

o The way we advance our cause (kingdom) is through conquest. (Violence)

Verses 7-8 | …He said to me, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance and the ends of the earth your possession.”

• God’s timeline…God can speak something that takes a while to come into full picture.

• Chronological Bible Genesis 1-11 THEN JOB!

• God made a promise to David that one of his descendants would sit on his throne forever (2 Samuel 7:16)

• Who does this speak of … JESUS

• This verse speaks of Jesus’ baptism “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” While the 2 texts sound different, they are actually very similar.

• This leads to Jesus’ temptation where Satan shows Jesus the kingdoms of the world and says, “all of this I will give you, if you worship me…”

• Jesus remembers his identity and his inheritance. God the Father spoke identity and promise.

• Today, I have become your father – Speaks of David and his desendants.

• In the Greek, this phrase can be translated either “Today I have become your Father” or “Today I reveal you as my Son.”

• This also may refer to the Incarnation of Jesus which is a 1 – time event.

Verse 12 | Pay homage to the Son (kiss the Son)…all who take refuge in him are happy:

• Ruggles Mine Field Trip

o NH known as the Granite State (rock)

o Famous Location in Grafton, NH called Ruggles Mine

o We were instructed to stay with the group and me and my friends did not follow those instructions. I almost fell into a mine.

o We often fear giving up the right to do the right thing even though it is for our good and our protection.

o Kiss the Son – Surrender to his authority.

o Honor the Son and God will lead you to still waters (Psalm 23)
