Summary: a Communion Meditation to go along with sermon series

1 John 5:1-5

1. Last week we talked about knowing our adversary. We learned the Satan is defeatable.

a. But the question remains: How is Satan defeatable?

b. The simple answer to that question is this: by Jesus and Jesus alone

c. I think many of us have that all American spirit.

Work hard, overcome all obstacles and do it yourself.

d. But this just does not work. YOU CAN NOT DEFEAT SATAN ON YOUR OWN.

i. As a matter of fact, you cannot defeat him at all.

ii. Satan has great power to work against us, and he does.

iii. If you do not feel as though he is working against you, he is doing a really good job.

iv. If you follow Christ, you will be attacked. That is not what is at issue. What is at issue, is how will you respond to the attacks?

2. Even though we can not defeat Satan on our own, does not mean that we surrender the fight.

a. Our scripture here tells us that to love god, means to obey his commands.

b. We are to live Holy lives, and as we do we will be tempted and Satan will try to destroy us.

c. We must wage war against him!

3. As follower of Jesus, we have a supernatural way to defeat Satan

a. We do not fight for victory… we fight from victory

b. Vs 4: “this is the victory that has overcome the world.”

c. You see the battle has already been won.

i. Christ is already the victor.

1. 1 john 4:4: you dear children are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

ii. What a relief this should be for us!

iii. We do not have to fight for victory. Victory already belongs to Jesus. And by association to US!

1. Colossians 2:14-15- having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away , nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

Today as we celebrate communion, we have the opportunity to celebrate and be reminded of that Victory that has already been won for us.

This bread and this cup are symbols of the victory that Jesus has already won.

Do you recognize that victory? Do you hold tight to that truth and hope?

Jesus is the victory?
