A Coat Of Many Colors - #1 Amber Series

A Coat of Many Colors #1 Amber

Genesis 37:1-3 (KJV) 1 And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan. 2 These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report. 3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.

What, is so significant about a coat of many colors? That’s what I wondered too until God began to show me. So I spent some time researching the colors that could have been used.

Today we will be looking at the first color and it is - AMBER.

With some research I found that the color amber would be a blend of yellow and orange color that got its name from the material known as amber. Due to this, amber can refer not to one but to a series of shades of orange, since the natural material varies from nearly yellow when it is newer, to orange or reddish-orange when older.

This color is only mentioned three times in the Book of Ezekiel, and boy but does it have meaning.

Ezekiel 1:4 (KJV) 4 And I looked, and, behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness was about it, and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire.

Ezekiel 1:26-28 (KJV) 26 And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it. 27 And I saw as the colour of amber, as the appearance of fire round about within it, from the appearance of his loins even upward, and from the appearance of his loins even downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness round about. 28 As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake.

Ezekiel 8:1-4 (KJV) 1 And it came to pass in the sixth year, in the sixth month, in the fifth day of the month, as I sat in mine house, and the elders of Judah sat before me, that the hand of the Lord GOD fell there upon me. 2 Then I beheld, and lo a likeness as the appearance of fire: from the appearance of his loins even downward, fire; and from his loins even upward, as the appearance of brightness, as the colour of amber. 3 And he put forth the form of an hand, and took me by a lock of mine head; and the spirit lifted me up between the earth and the heaven, and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem, to the door of the inner gate that looketh toward the north; where was the seat of the image of jealousy, which provoketh to jealousy. 4 And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel was there, according to the vision that I saw in the plain.

Thus we can see that the color of amber was representative of God’s glory and presence.

What was Joseph to glean from this color?

I’m sure that Jacob maybe remembered his own vision of God’s glory.

Maybe his intent was for the Amber in the coat to remind Joseph everyday that God’s glory is real and that the presence of God should never be taken for granted.

Turn to Exodus 3:1-6

Here in the passage we see that God wanted to speak to Moses.

It was here, that the angel of the Lord (an Old Testament appearance of Christ) speaks to Moses from a burning bush.
