Chastisement Lesson 13 Series

1. The Faith Chapter (Hebrews 11) has brought before us an array of men and women who in times past conquered through faith. They lived before the work of the cross, and before Christ had ascended as High Priest. Many have trusted in Christ, how much more should we!

2. They are our witnesses in the sense of being able to see us coming or witnesses to us by their examples.

3. These are not the ones on whom our thoughts are to be centered. Looking unto Jesus (v. 2, “Looking away unto” a word used only here and meaning to turn the eyes away from other things to fix them solely on one thing).

4. While we are to cherish the memory of the saints in Heaven, walk with firmer steps because of their lives, our eyes are to be fixed on Jesus.

5. If we are to make real progress on the racecourse of life, what two types of hindrances must be removed? Weight and sin (v. 1).

6. For the sake of serving Him effectively, we may have to lay aside many things which would consume too much of our time, or energy, and which might be a stumbling block to some weaker person.

7. What quality must we have? Patience (v. 1, cf. Romans 2:7; 12:12).

8. Why look to Jesus alone? Author and finisher (v. 2).

9. Who will lead us to “the end of our faith? Christ (1 Peter 1:9).

10. What will He do who has begun the work of faith in us? Perform till the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6).

11. What is the supreme example of victorious faith that Jesus has given us? Endured the cross, despised the shame – sat down (v. 2).

12. If it is sometimes costly to maintain a testimony for Christ, what should we remember? Christ our example (v. 3).

13. Have many spilt their own blood as the result of their conflict with evil? Not many (v. 4).

14. Though we may be called upon to endure a few things for His sake, how should we regard it? Do not despair (v. 5).

15. Is discipline necessarily an evidence that we have incurred the wrath of our Father. No, it is evidence of love (v. 6; Proverbs 13:24)

16. If we were without chastisement, could we consider that God had been faithful to us? No chastisement is His faithfulness (v. 7; Psalm 119:75).

17. What would be certain about a professing Christian who could live in sin without feeling himself under the rod of God? Not saved (v. 8).

18. If we expect to enjoy union of life with the Father, what should we gladly accept? Suffering and correction (v. 9).

19. While earthly parents chastened us after their own fallible judgment, what is our advantage when we are fully submitted to our Heavenly Father? Partakers of holiness (v. 10: Titus 2:14).

20. While God’s providences may seem mysterious and hard to bear, on what should we reckon throughout? Fruit unto righteousness (v. 11).

21. In view of the blessed ministry of trials, what should the Christian do? Determine to overcome (vv. 12-13) the better reading is: “Wherefore straighten out the relaxed hands and the weak knees and walk straight paths with your feet lest.” Instead of allowing oneself to be disqualified, he should determine to overcome.

22. What fact concerning “our God” is to be kept in mind? His will eventually judges us (v. 29; Deuteronomy 4:24).

If you have never really accepted Jesus as your personal Savior, would you do it right now? Do not delay or put it off. If you would like to receive Christ by faith, pray this simple prayer in your heart:

Dear Lord, I acknowledge that I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died for my sins on the cross, and rose again the third day. I repent of my sins. By faith I receive the Lord Jesus as my Savior. You promised to save me, and I believe You, because You are God and cannot lie. I believe right now that the Lord Jesus is my personal Savior, and that all my sins are forgiven through His precious blood. I thank You, dear Lord, for saving me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
