As followers of Christ, we are called to live a life that is separate from the world. In 2 Corinthians 6:17-18, God instructs us to "come out from them and be separate" and to "touch no unclean thing." This includes avoiding worldly influences that can lead us astray and distract us from our walk with God. In this sermon, we will explore the biblical perspective on avoiding worldly entertainment such as TV and movies, internet pornography, and computer games.
The Dangers of Worldly Entertainment
TV and Movies: While not all TV and movies are inherently evil, many of them promote values and lifestyles that are contrary to biblical teachings. They often glorify violence, sex, and materialism, which can desensitize us to sin and lead us away from God.
Internet Pornography: Pornography is a sin that can have serious consequences for our spiritual and mental health. It can lead to addiction, destroy relationships, and distort our view of sex and intimacy. In Matthew 5:27-28, Jesus warns us that looking at someone with lustful intent is equivalent to committing adultery in our hearts.
Computer Games: While computer games can be a harmless form of entertainment, many of them promote violence, competition, and escapism. They can also be addictive and distract us from more important things, such as our relationships with God and others.
Biblical Principles for Making Choices
Philippians 4:8: "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things."
1 Thessalonians 5:22: "Abstain from all appearance of evil."
Psalm 101:3: "I will set no worthless thing before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not fasten its grip on me."
Practical Applications
Set boundaries: Establish clear guidelines for what you will and will not watch, read, or play.
Find alternative entertainment: Engage in activities that promote spiritual growth, such as reading Christian books, listening to worship music, or playing games that promote teamwork and cooperation.
Seek accountability: Share your struggles and boundaries with a trusted friend or mentor and ask them to hold you accountable.
Pray for discernment: Ask God to give you wisdom and discernment to make choices that honor Him.

As followers of Christ, we are called to be discerning and intentional about the entertainment we choose. We must evaluate everything we watch, read, and play in light of biblical principles and avoid anything that could lead us astray. By doing so, we can protect ourselves from the corrupting influences of the world and maintain a pure and holy heart before God.
