3. To encourage them to a lifestyle of unity, holiness and joy

D. To whom written: Philippian believers

E. Main theme: JESUS CHRIST

VIII. MAIN BODY:

A. Works is a spiritual word not a physical "work" that will gain you money, income or profit in the end. Does not refer to a "job" in the Bible.

1. Greek word: "energeo" which means "to be active, efficient", effectual, fervent, be mighty, shew forth self, work

2. Used 21 times in 19 verses of the New Testament Greek

B. What are it's usage?

1. Refers to miracles

Matthew 14:2 (Amplified Bible)

And he said to his attendants, This is John the Baptist; He has been raised from the dead, and that is why the powers of performing miracles are at work in Him.

Mark 6:14 (Amplified Bible)

King Herod heard of it, for [Jesus’] name had become well known. He and they [of his court] said, John the Baptist has been raised from the dead; that is why these mighty powers [of performing miracles] are at work in Him.

2. Works of the Law

Romans 7:5 (Amplified Bible)

When we were living in the flesh (mere physical lives), the sinful passions that were awakened and aroused up by [what] the Law [makes sin] were constantly operating in our natural powers (in our bodily organs, in the sensitive appetites and wills of the flesh), so that we bore fruit for death.
