PART 1

Introduction: For the next several week’s I am going to spend considerable amount of time on the subject of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and that which is closely related in some aspects – the subject of tongues. I will be breaking it down in very simple and concise terms so that we may all understand what God desires for us in its fullest. My desire is as God’s desire – I want you to receive all that God has for you so that you may become pure and blameless in these days, striving to become more and more like Christ in every aspect of your lives. For this is the desire of every true Christian who knows Christ in his/her heart and mind. We need God’s help to do this because without it we will attain nothing but rubbish!

In preface I want you to set this in your mind and heart.

#1. For us to be saved we must come into relationship with Jesus Christ (confess our sins, repent, and follow Him)

#2. For us to be all that God wants us to be we must be filled/baptized in the Holy Spirit.

Today we will cover these questions.

1. What is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?

2. When does the Baptism of the Holy Spirit happen?

3. How is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit different from receiving the Holy Spirit at conversion or being born-again?

4. How can we know that we are baptized in the Holy Spirit?

5. How do we know whether we really have the Baptism of the Holy Spirit or whether it is just us?

Let’s begin.

1. What is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?

Scripture: Acts 1:8

Acts 1:8 (NASB95) 8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”

Answer: The scripture defines the Baptism of the Holy Spirit as “an enduement (to endow [provide] with a quality or ability) of power for service.” Clearly, we see the power of the Holy Spirit is given so that we can be the witnesses that God wants us to be.

2. When does the Baptism of the Holy Spirit happen?

- There are three baptisms mentioned in scripture: (Refer to Table #1)

(1) John’s Baptism (baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins – water baptism)

Mark 1:4 (NASB95) 4 John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

Acts 13:24 (NASB95) 24 after John had proclaimed before His coming a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

Acts 18:25 (NASB95) 25 This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he was speaking and teaching accurately the things concerning Jesus, being acquainted only with the baptism of John;

(2) Baptism into the name of the Lord Jesus (baptism for the forgiveness of your sins – water baptism)

Acts 2:38-39 (NASB95) 38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 “For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.” Acts 8:16 (NASB95) 16 For He had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Acts 10:47-48 (NASB95) 47 “Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?” 48 And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay on for a few days.

Acts 19:5 (NASB95) 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Romans 6:3 (NASB95) 3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?

(3) Baptism of the Holy Spirit

Acts 1:5 (NASB95) 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

Acts 2:38 (NASB95) 38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 8:16-17 (NASB95) 16 For He had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then they began laying their hands on them, and they were receiving the Holy Spirit.

Brother, I believe their was only one Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit Baptism in Scripture and that was the baptism of the Church, not individuals. There is a difference in being baptized and filled. Christ told his church to wait until they received power from on high. This Holy Ghost baptism of Acts was the perfecting of the church not the individuals. Also, the audible sound was the sound of a rushing mighty wind that filled the house (Acts 2:2). The speaking with other languages was only after the individuals had been filled. There is only one Holy Ghost Baptism, yet there are/can be many fillings. Davy Hobson
