The giants keep coming

Key Scripture: 2 Sam 21:15-22

When the Philistines were again at war with Israel, David and his servants with him went down and fought against the Philistines, and David grew faint.

Then Ishbi-Bemob, who was one of the sons of the giants, the weight of whose bronze spear was three hundred shekels, who was bearing a new sword, thought he could kill David. But Abishai the son of Zeruiah, came to his aid and struck the Philistine and killed him.

Then the men of David swore to him, saying, "You shall go out no more with us to battle, lest you quench the lamp of Israel."

Now it happened afterward that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob. Then Sibbechai the Hushathite killed Saph, one of the sons of the giant. Again there was war at Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaare-Oregim the Bethlehemite, killed the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.

Yet again there was war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, who had six fingers on each hand, and six toes on each foot, twenty-four in number, and he was also born to the giant.

So when he had defiled Israel, Jonathan, the son of Shimea, David's brother, killed him.

These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants.

Most, if not all people, are familiar with the story of David and Goliath. To many of us when we read the story of David and Goliath in the Bible, we think that this is the only encounter that he had to face when facing giants. However, when we read this chapter, we see that he had to face up to many giants as well that were all relatives and somehow they were all related to Goliath. We can all relate to this in some way or another because the giants will keep on coming, but in the midst of everything that is going on, we must always remember that God is bigger than any giant that we will face, and because of Jesus Christ we will overcome.

1. Nobody goes through life facing only one giant. The minute you take one giant out, the rest of them will hunt you down.

2. Some of the biggest giants that we will have to face are the giants from within and not from without.

3. The majority of your giants are fought and conquered by falling to your knees.

2 Cor 10:4-6

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty in God, for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,

and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled

Eph 6:11-18

Put on the whole armor of God, that you may able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly place.

Therefore take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of rigjteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace.

Above all taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one

And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God;

praying always with all prayers and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.

4. There are some people that have been in battle with so many giants that eventually they become so tired of fighting.

5. Giants might seem to suddenly appear from the middle of nowhere at a time you are least expecting them to.

6. David became too old to fight and as a result of this he sent in troops to help him. Much earlier in the Bible, we read of somebody else whose hands grew tired. (Exo 17:11-14) When his hands were lifted, Israel won, but the moment his hands went down, the Amalekites won, so in order to secure victory, Aaron and Hur made him sit on a rock and supported his hands, one on either side of him, in order for them to secure victory against the Amalekites.

7. Every giant will fall, provided we keep our eyes focused on Jesus, and remain faithful to the calling with which God has called us, thus not losing focus of the end goal.
