Contributed by Thomas Monroe on Sep 10, 2002 (message contributor)
Summary: This is the first of a series of messages encouraging people to pursue the faith demonstrated by those in the Bible.
“Superhero in the Making”
Hebrews 11:1-3
Faith: Webster says a belief in something for which
there is no proof. The world says no proof,
but the Christian says there is plenty of
proof. There is evidence of His power
experienced personally and witnessed by others
who see the fruits of our faith.
Superheroes in the making must have a faith that is:
I. Sure - (Hebrews 11:1)
A. Contrast a wish vs. a hope
1. Hope - A belief that what we cherish or
desire in our hearts will be fulfilled.
2. To wish is to hope by human standards with no guarantees of fulfillment.
3. To hope is to know by heaven‘s standards there is a guarantee.
B. What I might wish for but have no
gaurantees:
1. My family to be saved
2. The church will be faithful in all
things
3. Peace in the world
C. What I can hope for with assurance of it
becoming a reality:
1. Salvation through faith
2. Heaven with salvation
3. Strength to accomplish His glory
II. Certain - (Hebrews 11:1)
A. Seen vs. Unseen
1. To see and believe is to accept
reality. Example: Thomas (John 20:24-31)
2. To not see and believe - that is FAITH!
example: God‘s elect(1 Peter 1:8-9)
B. The things that I can detect with my
senses are easy to believe.
1. I can see evidence of wealth
2. I can hear musical talent
3. I can smell and taste an ability to cook
C. The things that I can’t see are things I
might must take in faith.
1. Electricity, brain, bobber
2. Creation of the world (vs. 3)
3. Power of God in my life
III. Commended - (Hebrews 11:2)
A. To be commended is to be “praised”
1. Not as much as God is for we are not worthy
2. This praise was more than a pat on the back, a high five, a ‘thatta boy’!
3. A father praises a son
B. Abel was commended by faith (vs. 4)
C. Others commended by faith (Vs. 39)
D. With it comes reward
