Some Implications of Grace

Message Point: Grace trumps the law every time yet we obey the law as if it could save us.

Focus Passage: Galatians 3:1-5

Supplemental Passage: But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many. The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment arose from one transgression resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift arose from many transgressions resulting in justification. For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ. So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men. (Romans 5:15-18 NASB)

Introduction: True Christianity is not a religion. A religion is man’s way of reaching up to God or a god and doing what he can to please him. True Christianity is God reaching down to man. The difference is profound. Religion is a list of do’s and don’ts. This list defines every aspect of life and of worship. True Christianity is defined by love. Love and grace controls every aspect of life and worship. When people don’t understand the grace that been extended to them, they are not able to extend it toward others.

In contrast to the two commands of Christ, the Pharisees had developed a system of 613 laws, 365 negative commands and 248 positive laws...By the time Christ came it had produced a heartless, cold, and arrogant brand of righteousness. As such, it contained at least ten tragic flaws. (1) New laws continually need to be invented for new situations. (2) Accountability to God is replaced by accountability to men. (3) It reduces a person’s ability to personally discern. (4) It creates a judgmental spirit. (5) The Pharisees confused personal preferences with divine law. (6) It produces inconsistencies. (7) It created a false standard of righteousness. (8) It became a burden to the Jews. (9) It was strictly external. (10) It was rejected by Christ. Outlined from Fan The Flame, J. I. The Law Does Not Save

a. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; (Ephesians 2:8 NASB)

b. because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin. (Romans 3:20 NASB)

II. The Law Does Not Perfect

a. For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. (Romans 8:3-4 NASB)

b. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9 NASB)

III. The Law Does Not Give Life

a. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. (John 1:17 NASB)

b. being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; (Romans 3:24 NASB)
