MY BROTHER IS BIGGER THAN YOURS

Hebrews 1:1-3

Introduction:

I can remember growing up with a younger brother that had a “smart” mouth. Tharon, my brother, while in elementary school, was always picking fights with kids bigger than himself or several at a time. Therefore, he was always getting me involved. Now I was never much of a fighter. I did not enjoy fighting nor was I very good at it; but that didn’t matter to Tharon because I was tall, and he always used that as his reasoning. Behind Southern Heights Elementary school is an old grocery store and that was where all of the school fights took place. I know that because that is where I usually could find Tharon after school. I would walk up to where the circle of kids would be and there in the middle would be Tharon and usually some fairly large kid. They would be exchanging a lot of words and Tharon would always say something stupid like. “Oh really, my brother is bigger than you are and he is going to beat you up”. The other boy would reply “Well my brother is bigger than yours”; and Tharon would say, “I bet he’s not”. These conversations always had me looking down the barrel of trouble.

Many of you having similar stories I’m sure, but I am here to say this morning, “My brother, Jesus Christ, is far more superior to any other”. You may be thinking, how is Jesus your brother? Jesus is God’s only begotten Son, but if you are a born again Christian, you are an adopted child of God. Therefore, you are a brother of Jesus Christ though adoption. Many times as Christians, we put men of Scripture like Paul or Peter way up there. Yes, they were great men of God, but none can compare to Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 1:1-3 (NIV)

“In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.”

I believe you would agree with me that these men that God used to write the Bible and to prophesy in His name were great men of God. The Holy Spirit inspired these men in what to write; but the message that the prophets preached to the people was incomplete by themselves. There messages came bit by bit through visions, dreams, events and direct communication as they were ready and able to receive it. These men of God were used in a mighty way; but they were sinners, and they in themselves cannot save us from our sins. Although the messages of the prophets were in fragments, the message of Jesus Christ is complete. He is the Son of God and His message is for the last days. Jesus can be seen throughout all Scripture. He was there in the beginning and He will be there in the end. Jesus’ incarnation initiated the end time and it will be fulfilled when He returns to Earth to reconcile and restore all things.

This morning, I want you to see why Jesus is a better messenger than the prophets.

Jesus is the better messenger because of…

1. Who He is.

Jesus is described as “the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being”. Jesus did not become the Son at some point during His earthly ministry.

He did not become deity- He was and will always be God. He is the Creator of the Universe, the Word, and heir to all things.

Jesus is the better messenger because of…

2. What He has done.

Jesus is sustaining and carrying all things. Jesus, the Creator of the Universe, came to this Earth and took the form of man so that He could die and have victory over sin. The message of Jesus is salvation through Himself. Preachers, nor prophets, nor deacons can carry all things for you; but Jesus can. Jesus will carry through for all eternity.

Jesus is the better messenger because of…

3. Where He is.

After Jesus died on the cross, defeated death, and arose from the grave after 3 days, He had provided a way for us through Him. When He had provided purification for sin, He sat down on high. This sitting doesn’t refer to being inactive; rather it shows that His redemptive work was finished. Jesus had paid the ultimate price. The Levitical priest’s sacrifices were no longer necessary. The priest’s sacrifices were continual, yet Jesus paid the price in full.
