Good morning, Church! Today, we are journeying through the pages of the Old Testament, specifically 1 Kings 1:1-5:18. We'll be exploring the final days of King David, Solomon's request for wisdom, and the preparations for the Temple. In the words of revered Christian author, A.W. Tozer, "Wisdom is the ability to discern and judge which aspects of knowledge are true, right, lasting, and applicable to your life." This will be our guiding light as we delve into Solomon's plea for wisdom.
Let's pray. Heavenly Father, we ask for your wisdom today as we dive into your Word. Help us to discern and apply the truths we uncover, just as Solomon needed your wisdom to rule your people. Open our hearts and minds to receive what you have for us today. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

In the twilight of his life, King David, the man after God's own heart, was facing the inevitable frailty of old age. The scripture tells us that he was very old and could not keep warm, even when they put covers over him. This is a poignant image of a once mighty king, the shepherd boy who defeated Goliath, the warrior who led Israel to numerous victories, now in a state of physical decline. Yet, even in his weakened state, David's story was far from over. His final days were filled with intrigue, power struggles, and the passing of the mantle to his son, Solomon.
David's physical weakness opened the door for his son Adonijah to attempt to seize the throne. Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, put himself forward and said, 'I will be king.' This was a blatant disregard for God's ordained succession plan, which was for Solomon, not Adonijah, to succeed David. The audacity of Adonijah's move underscores the political instability of the time and the vulnerability of David's reign due to his old age. Yet, God's plan would not be thwarted by human ambition.
In the midst of this turmoil, David demonstrated his faith in God's promise. He declared Solomon as his successor, ensuring the continuity of his lineage and the fulfillment of God's promise that his descendants would sit on the throne of Israel. David's actions in his final days were a testament to his unwavering faith in God's promises, even when his physical strength was failing him.
David's final days also served as a transition period, a time of preparation for Solomon's reign. Solomon was young and inexperienced, and the responsibility of ruling a nation would be a daunting task. Yet, David's guidance and wisdom during this time would have been invaluable to Solomon. David's experiences, both his triumphs and his failures, would have served as lessons for Solomon as he prepared to take on the mantle of leadership.
David's final days remind us of the importance of finishing well. Despite his physical weakness and the political turmoil surrounding him, David remained faithful to God and ensured the continuity of his lineage. He faced his final days with courage and faith, setting an example for all of us on how to navigate the twilight of our lives.
