Honor One Another Series

“One another” verses:

• “Accept one another the, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God” (Romans 15:7).

• “You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love” (Galatians 5:13).

• “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you” (Ephesians 4:32).

• “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ” (Ephesians 5:21).

• “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love” (Ephesians 6:2).

• “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:25).

• “Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble” (1 Peter 3:8).

• “Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling” (1 Peter 4:9).

We will not “honor one another” until we “LOVE one another.”

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:34-35).

Love is an ACTION verb.

Love is thought to be something that a person can “fall” in and out of. Love is not an emotion. It is an attitude, a mind-set. We are commanded to love, it is therefore a choice we make, a matter of the will.

“Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth” (1 John 3:18).

“Love must be sincere” (Romans 12:9a).

Other translations:

• “Let love be without dissimulation” (KJV).

• “Let love be without hypocrisy” (NKJV, NASB).

• “Don’t just pretend to love others” (NLT).

• “Let love be genuine” (ESV).

The Greek word for “sincere” is anupokritos. The underlying word was often applied to an actor who “played a part” on the stage.

Big Idea: We are commanded to honor others and Christ has honored us.

“Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5).

1. Honoring others means that we VALUE others.

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother”—which is the fist commandment with a promise—‘that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth’” (Ephesians 6:1-3).

Christ valued us so much that He gave up His RIGHTS as the Son of God.

“Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped” (Philippians 2:6).

2. Honoring others means that we put others FIRST.

“Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves” (Romans 12:10).

Christ put us first by becoming our SERVANT.

“But made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness” (Philippians 2:7).

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).

3. Honoring others means that we are willing to make SACRIFICES for others.

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:3-4).

Christ sacrificed His LIFE for us.

“And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross!” (Philippians 2:8).

HONOR ONE ANOTHER

We will not “honor one another” until we “_____________ one another.”
