Matthew 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted.
I. Comforted from Sin that Indwells Us
Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted.
Do you mourn over what is lost because of sin in your own life?
Do you deeply regret your own sin?
Luke 18:9-14 Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: (10) "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. (11) The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. (12) I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.' (13) And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' (14) I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."
Does it matter if we mourn over our own sin?
2 Corinthians 7:10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.
If we don’t regret our own sin, we will never turn from it
Notice the sequence of events in Jesus’ sermon. The poor in Spirit recognize their own sinfulness and lack of ability to change their destiny. Those who humbly recognize their condition, then can mourn over it and repent.
Of course, we never arrive at perfection on this side of glory, but that doesn’t mean that we should not strive for it.
Philippians 3:12-16 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. (13) Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, (14) I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. (15) Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you. (16) Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us be of the same mind.
Jesus isn’t giving us the do attitudes, but the beatitudes. The are the characteristics of believers, not rules to keep………….
Christians are Comforted from sin that indwells us and we can also be……..
II. Comforted from Sin that Surrounds Us
Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted.
Most Christians are way too comfortable living in this sinful world. Sin should shock and annoy us…..but for many, it is doesn’t bother them at all
Romans 8:5-8 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. (6) For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. (7) Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. (8) So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
How do we move from the carnal mind to the Spiritual mind?
Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; (6) In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
We quit trying to Doing and start Being. We daily die to self and allow God to do the work of transformation.
Luke 9:23-24 Then He said to them all, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. (24) For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.
Matthew 11:28-29 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (29) Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
John 14:26-27 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. (27) Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
