Summary: Sermon from the Gospel of John examining the person of Jesus Christ as the Divine Word.

THEME: ALL HAIL THE POWER OF JESUS’ NAME

TITLE: CHRIST – THE WORD OF GOD

TEXT: John 1:1; 14

INTRODUCTION: My first real exposure to Alzheimer’s Disease was while the Pastor in Melville SK. An older couple attended the church. Ray and Muriel Fenwick. They were not members of the church. They were Primitive Methodists from England. Mrs. Fenwick developed the disease. She could not remember the names of anything. She would look out the window and say, “What is that?” Pointing to a car. In the garden she would call a carrot a rose. We thought she would die first. But she did not.

-What is in a word? Jesus is the Word of God. He is the Divine Logos. But what does this mean?

PROP: Every believer needs to understand what “the Word of God” means in relation to Jesus.

TRAN: Let us consider John 1:1; 14.

I. THE WORD REFERS TO HIS DESTINY vs.1a

-Jesus will reign forever. Hebrews 13:8 The Bible is clear, “His Word will not pass away. Heaven and Earth will pass away, but not one word which has come from the mouth of God will pass away.” The Word of God is eternal. You can trust Him. I wish I could trust politicians. They will let you down. I wish I could trust the police. Sometimes they will let you down. I wish I could trust parents. They will fail you. God is the only one who will not fail you or let you down. Prov. 30:5

II. THE WORD REFERS TO HIS DIVINITY vs.1b

-Jesus as the Word of God is God. Jesus Christ is the picture, the pattern, the expression, the very image of what God wanted to say to mankind. Hebrews 1:1-3. He is above all things. He has created all things. We worship Jesus Christ as the Divine Son of God.

Peter V. Deison, in his book The Priority of Knowing God, tells about Ramad, a man of India who was a member of a gang of robbers. On one occasion, while burglarizing a house, Ramad noticed a small black book containing very thin pages just right for making cigarettes. So he took it.

Each evening he tore out a page rolled it around some tobacco and had a smoke. Noticing that the small words on the pages were in his language, he began to read them before rolling his cigarettes. One evening after reading a page, he knelt on the ground and asked the Lord Jesus to forgive his sins and to save him. He then turned himself in to the police, much to their amazement. Ramad the bandit became a follower of Jesus Christ. And in the prison where he served his sentence for his crimes, he led many others to the Savior. The Word of God became to Ramad "the power of God to salvation." Romans 1:17-18

III. THE WORD REFERS TO HIS DWELLING vs. 14

“and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”

-Jesus as the Living Word came to this earth to live out the Written Word. Years ago in seminary I was enrolled in a class which studied the principles of teaching. I was ridiculed because I used a King James Bible. I taught my lesson to Grade five students on the Tabernacle in the Wilderness. It was entitled, “God came to camp with us.”

-When Jesus came the first time we call it “the Incarnation.” When you allow Him to come into your life we call this the “second Incarnation.” He dwells in us. We become a temple of the living God. Let him live with you. 1Corinthians 3:16-17

CONCLUSION: Muriel Fenwick was a tremendous piano player. She could remember very little from her life but she could play the old hymns and sing from memory. I would stand by the piano and she would play and we would sing. Songs like Hymn 223 – “God hath spoken by His Prophets” How was this possible? Her mind may have been gone but I tell you Jesus Christ was living inside her. She was a temple of the Living God. His Word was filling her mind with those songs and hymns of praise. They came from Jesus!

Luke 8:11-12 "Now the parable is this: the seed is the word of God. "And those beside the road are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they may not believe and be saved."
