Contributed by Dr. Jonathan Vorce on Jul 10, 2021 (message contributor)
Summary: Proverbs 22:1-16 are instructions concerning the foundational principles of finances for our children. We will also cover home mortgages.
Proverbs 22:1-15
Introduction
• We could start with verse six because this passage is addressed to the parents of children. It begins with the phrase “A Good Name” as the backdrop for the wisdom given.
Proverbs 22:6 - Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
• Verses 1-5 give us the “why” of the instructions given concerning our children.
• Verses 7-16 are the instructive verses.
Let’s have a look!
I. The Why – A Good Name
A. Choose Favor
1. Favor can produce silver, gold, great riches, plus more.
B. God Makes Everyone – Our choices determine whether we become rich or poor.
1. A prudent (cunning, crafty, street smart) man foresees evil and takes a pass on it.
2. A Simple Man (lazy, passive, whatever will be) doesn’t pay attention and is punished with debt! (Think Scriptural Context)
C. Life Choices Matter
1. Humility and reverential trust for the Lord produce riches, honor, and life.
2. The loud, boisterous, tell-all type person with find themselves living with thorns and snares. (They create a lot of trouble for themselves that could cost them their fortune)
II. The following is the foundation of wealth that we should all teach our children – Verses 7-15
A. V.7 – The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
1. Notice the location of this Scripture. – It’s right after the “Train up a child in the way they should go” passage!
2. Verse six, combined with verse seven, tells us that we are to train our children about the proper use of finances.
B. God is serious about this! Look at what He says to teach them…
1. V.8 – A person sowing in iniquity (wickedness) will reap vanity (nothing). The rod (clan, tribe offspring, children) of his anger (boisterous outburst of passion) shall fail (cease to exist or waste away). Teach your children that how they treat others matters!
2. V.9 – He that hath a bountiful (good, gracious, joyful, and kind) eye shall be blessed (able to bless God and others). Teach your children that it pleases God when we take care of the needy.
3. V.10 – It matters who you allow in your life! Evict the scorners (mockers and those who treat you like you are simple), and a lot of the drama will end in your life. (Contention, strife, and reproach will cease)
4. V.11 – Having the right spirit will attract the right kind of people in your life!
5. V.12 – Seek Knowledge
6. V.13 – Quit making excuses for not doing what you know you should do. Tell the truth! (A lion in the streets? Really?)
7. V.14 – Stay Pure. The term “abhorred of the Lord” speaks of the times in our lives that we get upset with God. (Anyone who says they have never been upset with God is not telling the truth)
8. V.15 – Foolishness (In context – being foolish with finances). The rod of correction (clan or group of people around us) can drive it (through wise counsel or correction in some cases) far from us.
III. Discussion – Let’s Talk Mortgages
A. When should a person purchase or refi?
1. If a person is renting
2. Term/Rate Reduction
3. Consolidate higher interest rate balances
B. What kind of mortgages are available?
1. 100% Mortgages (VA…)
2. 3 ½% Down (FHA…)
3. 10-20% Down (Conventional…)
4. Lease Options
5. Creative Financing
C. Down Payment Assistance
1. What are the qualifications?
2. Friends and Family Gifts
