Zechariah was anointed by God’s Spirit, who took him to heights of messianic revelation rarely equaled. He not only reveals a God who is able to protect His people, but a God who has given us what we need to know His Messiah & His plan for the future.

2. Repentance Precedes Restoration

Divine grace cannot be divorced from human responsibility. The bestowing of the riches of covenant grace are for those who are genuinely willing to turn away from sin to follow God alone.

3. God Returns To His People

After Zechariah's opening sermon on repentance a new section of prophecy is given in the form of a series of night visions. After Zechariah followed the Lord's 1st instructions - to preach repentance-the Lord continued to speak to him.

4. Answered Intercession

It is not easy to read God’s providence, but faith grasps that even behind what is indiscernible ‘in all things God works for the good of those who love Him’ (Rom 8:28). Though the rulers of the world were not watching out for God’s people, the Lord was.

Sufficient truth had already been revealed to Zechariah to encourage him & to enable him to encourage others. Zechariah though kept inquiring until God reveals that His Spirit will be poured forth through God's two anointed ones so that God's light shine

God has promised restoration to the repentant remnant but before that period of blessing can dawn, God must deal with stubborn & unrepentant sinners. If the way of Grace is not accepted, judgment must come.

God desires to curb the trend toward formalism in religion which is satisfied with meeting external observation. To obey the moral precepts & principles of the word is infinitely more important than ceremonies & man-made traditions.

The incentive of future blessings is held out to the present as reason for repenting and living a heart-emanating kind, compassionate and righteous life. So here we have the assurance of full kingdom blessing for Zion and Jerusalem.

These people were only a few years out of the despair that failure brings but they were repentant & becoming obedient. So God gives them the assurance that He has responded to their repentance & obedience & has purposed a time of blessing.

After seeing the humble Messiah riding on a donkey the prophet's vision is directed to the victory that will follow and to the blessed results of the second coming. This Redeemer-King not only will deliver Zion and Israel but also to the entire earth.

In the the prophet's day the remedy for the deceptions of false shepherds was to focus on the Messiah. Focusing on Christ Jesus is also the way not to be deceived today.

How did Israel get into such trouble as revealed in Chapters 9 & 10? & as they are in presently? They invited such trouble upon themselves by following their false shepherds & rejecting their Messiah, the true Shepherd, when He first came to lead them.

In response to repentance & faith in Jesus, God cleanses you both inside & out. Sorrow over sin is not an end in itself. Those who repent & follow God find He revives the heart of the contrite & blots out their sins.
