As Christ was lifted between heaven and earth upon the cross, He uttered seven statements as He hung dying to provide redemption for fallen humanity. The first was a prayer to the Father, one in which Christ sought forgiveness for those responsible for the crucifixion.

As Jesus hung on the cross, between two condemned malefactors, He spoke words of grace to one who was repentant. In His dying moments, our Lord revealed the grace He came to secure for all who look to Him by faith.

As Jesus endured the sufferings and horrors of the cross, He remained concerned for the well-being of others. In this compelling statement, we find Jesus made both physical and spiritual provision for His mother.

The third saying from the cross of our Lord provided provision for His mother. Even as He hung in agony, dying to atone for sin, He was concerned with the well-being of His mother.

5. My God, Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me?

While we may understand the words Jesus spoke in this statement, we lack the ability to comprehend the enormity of His words and the actual context in which He spoke them. He was forsaken so we could escape being eternally condemned and forsaken.

Jesus concluded the profound statements from the cross with a final prayer to the Father. This was not a resignation of defeat, but the words of the sovereign Lord who remained in complete control, even in death.
