Beatitudes mean declarations of blessedness. If we were asked ‘what does it mean to be blessed’, our answers would not be what we find here in this list. But we know our way of thinking contrasts God’s way. The beatitudes reveal what our attitude should be.

We started looking into the beatitudes last week by seeing how being poor in spirit, mourning and being meek are things that bring blessing into our lives. Today we continue by looking at how we are blessed by hungering and thirsting for righteousness and being merciful.

Last week we saw that those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be blessed because they will be filled with it. And if we're merciful we will receive mercy. Today we’ll look at what it means to be pure in heart and a peacemaker and see how they're blessed.

Today we finish up the beatitudes. They all work together-being poor in spirit causes me to have godly sorrow. Being meek allows me to be merciful and thus-a peacemaker. If I hunger and thirst for righteousness I will be pure in heart. All of these are important in dealing with persecution.

Throughout the sermon on the mount, Jesus clarified misconceptions. He explained the deeper implications of the law and broadened their understanding so they could conduct themselves according to God's intentions. Today, Jesus does this regarding retaliation.

Today we start chapter six. Throughout chapter five we saw the phrase, "you have heard it was said". Jesus no longer starts out that way. Jesus isn't challenging contradictory teachings but contradictory practices. Today's lesson is on why we do good deeds.

For many people, their priority in life is material prosperity. When you hear the phrase, 'well off' or, 'well to do', it refers to someone who is wealthy. As we'll see today, those who have stored up treasures in heaven will truly be, 'well off' and 'well-to-do'.

What does worry accomplish for us? Nothing. It robs us. It robs our joy, our peace, our patience, our ability to trust and rely on God. It robs our ability to think rationally and find solutions to our problems. No wonder Jesus tells us to not worry.
