In one church where the pastor was preaching the Sermon on the Mount the roadside sign read, “Worlds greatest sermon” by pastor so and so.
Sometimes the Sermon on the Mount is referred to as the world’s greatest sermon. In one church where the pastor was preaching the Sermon on the Mount the roadside sign read, “Worlds greatest sermon” by pastor so and so. That was a little confusing. It is Jesus who preached the world’s greatest ...read more

Some of the Anabaptists of the sixteenth century had a very literal take on the words of Jesus from the Sermon on the Mount, “if the salt loses its saltiness, it is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. At the end of the service they would have the Christians ...read more

5. Love Your Enemies
Contributed on Dec 1, 2007
It is easy to love people of your own kind, but the Lord calls us beyond that.
Two men were on a cruise ship together and began to talk. Finally one of them asked, “Do you believe in God?" He said, "Yes." I asked, "Are you a Christian or a Jew?" He said, "A Christian." I said, "Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?" He said, "Protestant." I said, "Me, too! What ...read more

6. Living In A Fishbowl
Contributed on Dec 2, 2007
You live in a fishbowl and people are watching to see if your walk matches your talk.
I remember when I was pastor of a church and living in the parsonage directly across from the church. It was like living in a fishbowl. It was the glass house syndrome where it seemed everyone could see right into our house. People knew if I was home, because my car was parked there. They knew who ...read more

7. Motives: Sermon Of The Mount
Contributed on Jan 30, 2022
There is a difference between real prayer and just words. The improper way is to stand on the street corner to be seen by men. This is the way of the hypocrites, the play actors.
There was something taught in one of my business classes at Indiana University that has stuck with me. It is the concept of enlightened self-interest. This is a philosophy in business ethics which states that companies who act to further the interests of others, ultimately serve their own ...read more

During the Sermon on the Mount Jesus tells us not to worry, Matthew 6:25-34. In this passage three times Jesus tells his disciples not to be anxious, not to worry. Worry is Futile Matthew 6:25-27 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your ...read more

Jesus has just preached the greatest sermon in all of history in Matthew 5-6. It is known as the Sermon on the Mount. Matthew Chapter 7 is the greatest invitation of all times that concludes Jesus’ sermon. What will you do about what Jesus has said?
One of the elements of a sermon is the invitation. A sermon is more than information preached. In the invitation there is a call to action. What are you going to do with what you heard? How will you respond to how God has spoken to you? Jesus has just preached the greatest sermon in all of ...read more
