1. The Memorial That Disappeared
Contributed on Jun 11, 2021
The story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal is a classic. What we sometimes forget is that a memorial, an altar to the LORD, was already there before Elijah came! The rest of the story is gripping!
Introduction: The days of Elijah were some of the best and some of the worst in Israel’s history. One of the highest points took place when God responded to Elijah’s prayer in a way that nobody could deny. Not only did this take place in the presence of pagan prophets, the event also took place ...read more

2. The Double Memorial In Joshua’s Day
Contributed on Jun 19, 2021
There were two memorials constructed of stones on the day Israel crossed the Jordan River and entered Canaan. The LORD knew that eventually people would ask about these memorials. God told Joshua what to do and say.
Introduction: Moses had died and Joshua was now Israel’s leader to lead them into the Promised Land. When this story took place, Israel was camping on the east side of the Jordan River; Canaan itself was on the west. So that Israel would never forget what God did for them, God told Joshua to have ...read more

3. Achan-His Greed Cost Him His Life
Contributed on Jun 23, 2021
Some of us remember the Battle of Jericho but not very many remember Achan, who took some things which were not intended for anyone at the time. What he took, he couldn't keep, and he paid with his life.
Introduction: Israel had just won their first victory in Canaan. They had followed God’s commands to walk around the city, shout, and then God would do the rest. They next decided to attack Ai, a smaller city, but something awful happened. The sin of one man was the reason why. 1 Achan’s deceit ...read more

4. The Memorial At Mount Ebal
Contributed on Jul 2, 2021
Joshua built an altar to the LORD near Mount Ebal in Canaan. This happened after Israel had defeated Ai. Something unique to this altar was that Joshua wrote parts of the available Word of God on it.
Introduction: Israel, under Joshua’s leadership, defeated the people of Ai. After that, Joshua built an altar to the LORD, God of Israel, placing it in about the middle of the country. Israel had built two other memorials as recorded in Joshua chapters 3-4, but the altar Joshua built here had a ...read more

5. Ebenezer: The Stone Of Help
Contributed on Jul 24, 2025
Israel had just repented of idol-worship at Mizpeh. The Philistines, mortal enemies at the time, came close enough to cause Israel panic. Samuel prayed, the LORD delivered, and Samuel established the memorial stone of Ebenezer.
Ebenezer: The Stone of Help (Based on a sermon preached Sunday evening, May 18, 2025 at New Hope Baptist Church near Fulton, MO. This is not an exact transcription.) Introduction: Ebenezer. The name reminds us (me, anyway) of some characters I’d rather forget—as in, Scrooge. The word almost ...read more

6. King Manasseh And Three Memorials
Contributed on Aug 7, 2025
Manasseh, king of Judah, had the longest reign of any king in Israel or Judah. He walked in the way of sin, but repented, and proved it by taking care of several sets of memorials in Judah.
King Manasseh and Three Memorials Introduction: Manasseh, the king of Judah and son of Hezekiah, seemed to have a great future. His father had been a truly great king, as well as a good king because his father followed the LORD completely. Manasseh, though, promptly undid just about everything his ...read more

7. The Memorial Altar In Gilead
Contributed on Aug 12, 2025
Israel had taken control of much of Canaan. Two and a half tribes lived east of the Jordan River and decided to build a memorial altar for a witness of unity. When asked to explain, they replied honestly.
The Memorial Altar in Gilead (This message is based on a sermon preached at New Hope Baptist Church near Fulton, MO on Sunday evening, May 25, 2025 and is not an exact transcription). Introduction: Well-meaning things aren’t always perceived that way. In this message, we’ll see that a gesture of ...read more
