Philippians is a letter of appreciation for the faithfulness of Christians in Philippi, and is essentially a thanksgiving for the work of grace in Philippi, and for their thoughtfulness in sending Epaphroditus with a gift for Paul in prison in Rome.

3. Imprisonment Created Opportunities To Spread The Gospel

The apostle faced opposition from those outside the church and misrepresentation from some within. But this did not dissuade or distract him from fulfilling God’s call. Through it all, Christ was being preached, which brought him great delight.

Since Paul was in prison awaiting trial, he had to face the fact that it was quite uncertain whether he would live or die; and to him it made no difference.

Even Paul’s “ideal” congregation contained “difficult” people. Paul was facing his problems with people at Rome (Philippians 1:15-18) as well as with people in Philippi, and it was the latter who concerned him the most.

These verses clearly imply some disharmony in the church at Philippi. When Epaphroditus brought a gift to Rome from the church in Philippi and good news of the church’s concern for Paul, he also brought the bad news of a possible division in the church

Therefore “work out your own salvation” does not mean “devote yourselves energetically to the saving of your own souls,” but instead the meaning is “Co-operate with God in producing the fruits of the Christian life, which are love, joy peace and all the rest.”

Paul is sending Timothy to the Philippians for at least two purposes. Paul is eager to receive information about how the congregation is doing, whether they are living in a manner worthy of the gospel, and he wants to encourage them about his own situation in Rome.

If I were to give you a theme for chapter three, I would say "that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His suffering." This is Christian experience—to know Him. Not so much to know about Him, but to really know—Him. This is experimental knowledge.
