God creates. Everything begins with God and fulfills His purposes for His glory. He works by the power of His Word (Ps. 33:6–9), the same Word that can work in our lives. He works according to a plan: first He forms, and then He fills.

The work God did on the third day amounted to dual creation. At first the waters beneath the heavens, those upon the surface of the earth, were gathered together, so that the dry (or solid) ground appeared; and then the earth was made fruitful.

God prepared the earth for the man. The garden where He placed the man was designed to be his home, and it was apparently lush and perfect. This original habitat was a delightful shelter, containing everything the man needed.

Man was made outside of the garden; because it says here that after God had formed him, he “put him into the garden:” he was made from the common dust that accumulated upon the ground, not of paradise-dust.

Up to this point, God’s voice is the only one we have heard; creating and commanding. Now another “voice” is heard, the voice of Satan, the deceiver. Eve was deceived when she ate, but Adam was not; he sinned with his eyes wide open.

The pair has already shown their weakness when confronted by temptation; a lack of will-power and a desire to “do their own thing,” therefore the LORD God will act to insure they cannot eat from the tree of life.

There is, as usual, a grain of truth mingled with the amazing falsehood of this surly response. No man is the absolute keeper of his brother, to the extent he is responsible for his safety when he is not present. This is what Cain means to insinuate.
