1. A Futile Effort

God spoke to Jonah, calling him to go and cry against Nineveh. Foolishly, Jonah thought he could flee the presence of God. However, God intended for Nineveh to hear a warning, and He intended Jonah to deliver that warning. It is futile to try and flee God's presence!

Knowing Jonah was the reason for the storm the faced, the mariners continued to do all they could to spare Jonah from being thrown into the sea. Little did they know that God had a greater plan!

As Jonah found himself in the belly of a great fish, within the depths of the sea, he began to realize the sovereignty of God and his great need for Him. In his desperation, he cried out unto the Lord.

Like the prodigal son, Jonah came to himself in his moment of despair. He cried out unto the Lord, desiring renewed fellowship with Him. Seeking to flee the Lord's presence cannot delay the inevitable.

After Jonah survived being swallowed by a great fish, God graciously came to him a second time revealing His plan for Nineveh. God could have abandoned Jonah for his disobedience, and yet He was patient and faithful.

One of the most beautiful pictures of grace and repentance toward God is found in Jonah chapter three. Jonah preached a message of impending judgment; the people repented, and God extended mercy and grace.

It is sad when someone gets to a place in life where the misery of others brings satisfaction. Rather than desiring repentance and restoration, a desire to see judgment can outweigh compassion.
