Joel is a collection of poems, contained in three short chapters, written by a man we know very little about. We really don’t know when it was written. Joel is unique because he is announcing judgment, but never mentions any specific sin. He assumes we already know.

Amos was a shepherd who lived outside of Bethlehem. He also was a “dresser of sycamore trees” which no one knows the meaning. This was a prosperous time in Israel’s history, but they were morally bankrupt, worshipping the gods of weather, sex and war.

Haggai is written 60 years after the Israelites have been in captivity in Babylon. The Babylonian empire was in decline and now the Persians were the dominant force. The Persians allowed the Jewish people to return to Jerusalem, which was in ruins.
