Thoughts on Fasting
I begin this morning with a riddle, or, at least what I hope is a riddle. (Or maybe a pseudo-riddle).
The riddle is a common experience several of us have had over the years. Here it is: "Some of us have had to do it more than once. It something that we know is for our own

VERY HARD WORK
A favorite book for children is Frog And Toad Together by Arnold Lobel. Frog had a garden that Toad admired, and he wanted one too. So Frog told him: "It is very nice, but it was hard work." When he gave Toad some flower seeds, Toad quickly ran home and planted them.
"Now seeds,"

Several years ago, the devotional “Daily Bread” told the following story:
When Sheila and Mark moved into their new home, Sheila wondered about the neighbors. Would they accept the children? What about the dog? She soon found out.
Shortly after they moved in, their kids were playing in the backyard

PROPHETIC PREACHING
A.W. Tozer, one described as a modern-day prophet, spoke these words in the 1950’s and describes the need for prophetic preachers:
"If Christianity is to receive a rejuvenation, it must be by other means than any now being used. If the Church in the second half of this century

Jesus confronts all those misconceptions and says you can pray, this is how you do it (“Our Father”), and God does hear you. God is not out to punish you or play tricks on you by giving you poison when you need and ask for food. You don’t have to jump through all these man-made hoops. Ask, seek,

The only thing about Christmas that bothers me is that people see Jesus as a baby, meek and mild but they don’t see Him for all that He really is.
It always used to bother me that I was called a gentle man. I longed to be seen as strong and courageous and visionary, but people mainly see me as

PRAYER AND CHOPPING VEGETABLES
Jan and I were watching a cooking show the other day -- Ina Garten's Barefoot Contessa, I think it was -- and I commented on how Ina chops vegetables. In this instance, she was chopping parsley, and she held the knife in one hand while resting her other hand on top

Some years ago in Whitsunday Baptist Church a few men got together and started a prayer meeting. We met every week on a Monday morning at 6 am at Wyn’s place. It was high up on the side of a mountainous hill that overlooked Proserpine and back towards Airlie Beach. They were great prayer meetings.

WHAT AMERICANS BELIEVE
Even those who claim to be Born Again are not necessarily firmly grounded in the truths of the Bible. In his book which provides a statistical analysis of religious beliefs in America, George Barna cites several fascinating statistics which are based on a national survey.

THE HITCHHIKER
There was a man the side of the road hitch hiking on a very dark night in the middle of a storm. It was late at night and no cars were passing. The storm was so strong he could hardly see a few feet ahead of him.
Suddenly, he saw a car coming towards him and stop. Without further

THE STORY OF FAITH HOPE
Myah Hope was given the news that she was pregnant. Like most mothers to be, she dreamed of what giving birth to a child and raising them would be like.
