American Faith is Diverse, as Shown Among Five Faith-Based Segments
In this report we are looking at five segments of the population according to the nature and intensity of their faith. The five groups are evangelical Christians, born again Christians, people who describe themselves as Christian but are neither born again nor evangelical, adults of non-Christian faiths, and people who describe themselves as atheist or agnostic. Among the findings in the report are:
· Evangelicals are the only segment among which a majority describe
themselves as "mostly conservative," who base their moral decisions on religious perspectives, and who believe in absolute moral truth.
· Adults who are born again but not evangelical and those who describe
themselves as Christian but are neither evangelical nor born again are significantly more likely than atheists, agnostics and people of other faiths to strongly believe that the Holy Spirit is not real but is merely a symbol of God’s power or presence.
