Dr. Howard Hendricks illustrated this Biblical truth by contrasting two marriages. In the first, the husband complains constantly that his wife does not gratify a vast array of his psychic/sexual needs. He is planning to leave her and take up with another woman who, he says, “really turns me on. Hey, it’s not my fault that she fails to gratify me. We can’t change the way we are.”
This husband portrays the selfishness of so many who enter into marriage with the expectation that their partners are obligated to meet their needs. But in the other marriage the husband is committed to his wife’s happiness.
