The image of God in Human beings is like a sponge.
Sponges are useful creations. They are, we would say, Good.
But human beings after the fall are like a sponge that has been dipped in crude oil. The sponge is still there – it is still “good” but there is no where in the sponge that the oil is not present.
Even though the sponge still exists it is utterly useless with the crude oil saturating it.
Human beings were created by God in his very image and we have not destroyed it but through the original sin of Adam and Eve we are totally corrupted, there is nowhere that the image of God in us is untouched by the stain of sin.
But through the atonement of Christ there is a new opportunity:
Imagine if you would that the sponge is dipped into a powerful solvent (these do exist) that could remove even crude oil. The sponge is restored to its full use – it is as if it is an entirely
