Adopted Children are more likely to have parents who are older, married, wealthier and more educated than children raised by biological parents, reports the U.S. Census Bureau. 2.1 million adopted children and 4.4 million stepchildren lived in U.S. homes in ‘00. Together, these children represented about 8% of the 84 million children in U.S. households in ‘00. Of the adopted children living at home, 1.6 million were under 18. Only 13% of adopted children were born outside the U.S. International adoptions increased from 7,000 in ‘90 to nearly 18,000 in ’00. 48% of the foreign-born adopted children were born in Asia, 22% from Korea alone. 33% were born in Latin America and 16 percent in Europe. Of households with an adopted child, 76% were white, 15 % African American, and Asian. (PWB 9/5/03)
