Why Pastors Change: A new Ellison Research study finds the average American minister has held a paid job in ministry for 19 years and has spent an average of 15.6 of those years as a senior pastor. Typically he or she has been the senior pastor at 3 different churches. 20% change jobs due to a promotion, 16% wanting a larger church, 15% a transfer by the denomination, with 15% starting a new church. 27% change churches to serve in a different part of the country.
