Too Far 78% of Protestant clergy believe “the separation of church and state has gone too far, or in ways it was never intended to go,” according to a new Ellison Research study in the 7-8/04 edition of Facts & Trends magazine. Just 8% of all Protestant clergy agree with the statement, “the separation of church and state in the U.S. has not gone far enough; more is needed.” 13% believe “the current separation of church and state in the U.S. is right about where it should be.” Other findings include: *95% of all clergy believe the words “under God” should continue to be included in the Pledge of Allegiance. *96% say the motto “In God We Trust” should remain on U.S. currency. 90% say religious groups should be allowed to use government property for meetings if non-religious groups are allowed to do so. 86% think the 10 Commandments should be allowed in courthouses. 79% believe displaying a Christmas nativity scene on government property should be allowed. 71% also said displaying a Jewish menorah should be permissible.
