Religion Very Important: Roughly 6 in 10 Americans say religion is a “very important” part of their lives. A majority of Americans say they attend religious services at least once a month, including a third who go every week. More than 8 in 10 Americans are Christian, including roughly 50% who are Protestant and 25% that are Catholic. 64% of Americans belong to a church or synagogue. When given a choice 61% say, “religion can answer all or most of today’s problems,” while 24% feel “religion is largely old-fashioned and out-of-date.” Gallup’s early June poll found 43% of Americans attended church or synagogue in the past week, while 57% have not. 50% of all Americans identify themselves as Protestants, 25% Catholic, and 11% unaffiliated Christians. 3% say they are Jewish, and 7% have no religious preference. Among Protestants, 11% are Baptists (other than Southern Baptist), 9% Methodists, 6% Southern Baptist, 5% Lutheran, 3% Presbyterians 2% Pentecostal, 2% Church of Christ, and 2% Episcopalian.
