State Of The Unchurched: Since ‘91, the U.S. adult population has grown by 15%. During that same period the number of unchurched adults has nearly doubled, rising from 39 million to 75 million–a 92% increase! The latest Barna Group study shows that the percentage of unchurched adults has risen from 21% in ‘91 to 34% today. Although men constitute 55% of the unchurched, they represent only 38% of the born again public. The median age of U.S. adults is 43, but 38 among the unchurched; born again adults are 46. 26% of American adults are single-never-married vs. 37% of the unchurched. The unchurched are also attracted to the coastal regions of the nation. In a typical week, unchurched people are less likely than all adults to read the Bible (19% vs. 44%) and to pray (63% vs. 83%). About half of the churched population has accepted Jesus as their savior compared to 17% of unchurched adults. (Barna Update 5/4/04)
