A Mother’s Place Is At Home: 66% of American women with preschool children—and 56% of those with infants less than a year old—are in the labor force, but attitudes toward working mothers have changed little. Various research reports from the Lucile Packard foundation find that 75%-80% of Americans say it is best for mothers to stay home with their babies. Americans who believe a wife with a preschooler should work full time is largely unchanged from ’88 to ’94 from 10.7% to 11.6%. Yet 80% of Americans agree “it may be necessary for mothers to be working because the family needs money, but it would be better if she could stay and taker of the house and children.” (Gazette 9/10/01)
