Traditional Family Comeback A Myth: Headlines claiming women are leaving the workforce to become full-time moms have periodically appeared during recent years, but hard data just doesn’t back it up. The traditional family, with Mom at home full-time while Dad works shrank from 43% in ’80 to 27% in ’98, now sits at 28%. Hardly a mega-trend! Mothers working part-time hit 30% in ’94 and has lingered at 27% since ’97. It is something couples talk about often, but implement seldom. Also, growth of home-based workers and independent contrac-ting skew the data. (The Foster Network & WSJ 5/31/00)
