Since the late’30s, the Gallup Poll has asked Americans about church attendance. Historically, 40% said yes, but recent research found only about 20% actually attend in any given week, according to Religion in the News. The Study found that people figure that, even if they didn’t attend worship the week before, they can answer yes because they “usually” go to church. The study also revealed that some poll respondents count attending a wedding, funeral or even mowing the church lawn as church attendance. (Pastor’s Weekly Briefing 2/19/05)
