I met Rosemary when I was 15 years old. Her father was the proprietor of a pool hall called El Rancho Grande. He had two rules concerning me and the pool hall. Rule #1 was “If you play and lose, you pay.” Rule #2 was “If you play and win, you play for free.” Needless to say, I got as good as I could as fast as I could.
One day I pulled into El Rancho Grande and as I did, I executed a perfect u-turn into a vacant parking spot beside a police car. I hopped out of my ‘67 Mustang and started for the door.
About that time I heard, “Excuse me, young man.”
I turned around to see the officer addressing me. He asked, “Would you coming over here for a moment?”
I said, “Sure” and proceeded to the police car with no apprehension.
His next words, however, filled me with consternation, “Are you aware that you just made an illegal u-turn to park?”
“No sir! I wasn’t aware of that at all.”
“Well, you know, I am going to have to issue you a summons to appear in court for that.”
“What? You can’t mean that you are going to give me a ticket for parking beside you!”
“No, I’m giving you a ticket for making an illegal u-turn in the middle of the street!”
“Officer, you can’t do this! I saw you when I was going to park! I knew you were there! You know that if I had any idea that I was doing was illegal I would have never done it!”
And he said, “Ignorance of the law is no excuse”, and “Sign right here!” and “Here’s your ticket!” and “You have a fine day, now, ya hear?”
God is not like that policeman. He is not waiting for someone, anyone, everyone to do something wrong so that he can zap them. He is in Heaven with a view for all to make a u-turn from sin.!
