John sets up a stark contrast between the one who knows God and obeys what God has told us to do in verse 3, and the one who claims to know God but refuses to follow God’s Word for us.

Here’s the pattern:

• You say you have a relationship with the Lord

• You do not obey His Word

• That makes you 2-faced, a hypocrite, a liar.

What is a liar? One who does not tell the truth. In the Letters of John, whenever we read “the truth is not in you,” think of the word LIAR. If that’s you, then you are not in an intimate relationship with the Father. Don’t shoot the messenger! John’s writings are clear on this matter.
