How Long Is Eternity?

People have tried to describe eternity, but no preacher, no teacher, no human tongue can ever fully tell how long forever really is. At best, we can only stand at the edge of it, look into it, and feel our hearts break. Imagine a crow flying from the earth to the moon—a journey of nearly 240,000 miles. Imagine that little bird taking one grain of sand from the East Coast, carrying it all the way to the moon, and dropping it there. Then back again. One grain at a time. One trip at a time. Back and forth, again and again, until every grain of sand on the East Coast has been moved. Then let that crow go to the West Coast and do the same thing until every grain there has been carried away too. And when every last grain from both coasts has been laid on the moon, imagine that bird begins bringing it all back—one grain at a time, 240,000 miles each way, until every grain has been returned to its place. And when that unimaginable task is finally done, eternity will not be ending. Eternity will not even be halfway gone. Eternity will have only just begun. Oh, hear it and let it settle down into your soul: forever is forever. The saved will be with Christ forever, and the lost will be without hope forever. That is what makes this so heavy. That is what makes this so urgent. Souls are not playing games. Life is not a rehearsal. Men and women all around us are stepping toward an endless forever, and some of them are not ready to meet God. Oh, may God break our hearts over what is at stake. May He wake the careless, stir the church, and help sinners run to Christ while mercy’s door is still open.
