Celebrating Pastor Appreciation Day
It’s not every day I get to stand up here and talk to everyone on a Sunday morning, but when I do, it’s for a pretty special reason. Picture this: sunlight fills the room, the choir is quietly humming, and you can smell fresh coffee in the air. I step up, clear my throat, and start:
“Good morning! It’s so good to be here with you all, sharing in this time together—and, let’s be honest, looking forward to the potluck after church. Thank you, Pastor, for letting me speak today. If you don’t know me, I’ve got a few nicknames: Brother Taylor, LC, and sometimes folks call me the ‘Fixer-Preacher’—not because I fix leaky roofs or broken air conditioners! Though, if the AC stops working, I’ll keep the message short.”
“So, why am I here? Well, it’s kind of a tradition. Right before Pastor Appreciation Day, the committee gets together and tries to figure out how to remind everyone just how blessed we are to have our pastor. Pastor Appreciation Day is when we try to squeeze a whole year’s worth of thank-yous into one Sunday—and maybe a few casseroles, too.”
“They ask themselves: ‘How can we help everyone really appreciate our pastor’s sermons? How do we make sure folks leave feeling thankful—and maybe a little sorry for nodding off during the more complicated sermons?’
That’s when they decide, ‘Let’s have LC preach. After that, everyone will remember how great our pastor is—his gentle words, his organized messages, and the fact that he doesn’t always end with three points and a poem!’”
To be honest, I feel like the "before" photo you see in makeover commercials. After hearing me, you'll find your pastor's jokes funnier, his sermons more meaningful, and the whole atmosphere warmer. Think of me as a palate cleanser—like mouthwash—getting things ready so that when your pastor returns next week, everything seems fresh and pleasant again.
“So, get ready. If nothing else, today’s message will help you look forward to next week’s sermon. And remember, Pastor Appreciation isn’t just one day—it’s a way of thinking. And if you’re on the committee, it means planning, inviting guest speakers, and making strong coffee!”
