We have a custom of viewing the body, not just out of curiosity or to judge the mortician’s skill but to face reality. In doing that we grieve, which ventilates our sorrow and helps to bring emotional healing and relief.
A young boy in my former pastorate suffered the death of his thirty-year-old

One of the wisest statements I ever read said that feelings must be owned before they can be disowned. People who make the psychological approach of “stuffing their feelings” do themselves a disservice. They avoid hard reality instead of working through it.
When I was a pastor in Yorkville,

On Oct. 3, 1863, the war between the North and South raged, and Abraham Lincoln was weary with his anguished responsibility. Despite that he was able to write, ‘’The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties,

DR. HENRY BRANDT told of going to visit a friend whose wife had died. While there he shared these wonderful words of the apostle Paul from II Cor. 1:3-4, 8-11a: "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all

FANNIE JOHNSTON FLINT, who was cancerous, arthritic, incontinent, blind, orphaned, managed enough ability to get a pen into her warped hands and write a hymn, many of them, in fact. Perhaps you know this one:

People sometimes ask why the Bible is not more definite about the right to remarry after divorce for adultery. The answer is simple. In the Bible the right to divorce carries with it the right to remarry. The Fourth Century Latin Fathers tried to make this separation from bed and board. However,

Even when a remarriage does involve adultery, the adultery relates to the initiating act and not to the state. In some cases, remarriage does not involve adultery. God can, in fact, lead believers into second marriages which are totally free of that stigma.
We see a parallel in the commandment,

During a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico, a news report highlighted a rescue device used on the oil rigs. In case of fire or (in this case) hurricane, rig workers scramble into the bullet-shaped "bus" and strap themselves into their seats.
When the entry port is shut, the vehicle is released

MISSIONARY Gregory Fisher writes: "What will he say when he shouts?" The question took me by surprise. I had already found that West African Bible College students can ask some of the most penetrating questions about minute details of Scripture.
"Reverend, I Thess. 4:16 says that Christ

The sound of Martha’s voice on the other end of the telephone always brought a smile to Brother Jim’s face. She was not only one of the oldest members of the congregation, but one of the most faithful. Aunt Martie, as all the children called her, just seemed to ooze faith, hope, and

One of my favorite stories is the one about West Side Baptist Church in Beatrice, Nebraska. Normally all of the good choir people came to church on Wednesday night to practice, and they tended to be early, well before the 7:30 starting time. But one night, March 1, 1950, one by one, two by two,
