The apostle’s teaching is that life for the non-Christian is a living death. He is spiritually dead […] There is no stronger term than ‘death’. How categorical he is! You cannot say anything beyond saying that a man is dead. It is not ‘almost dead’, he is actually dead; it is not desperately ‘ill’, he is ‘dead’. There is no life there. Now this is the apostle’s word, not mine, the word that is used everywhere in Scripture; and it is the word that is used about man in a state of sin before the power of God unto salvation in the gospel comes and does something to him.
