A Click and a Pop-Up Menu! (06.30.05--Direction--John 21:15-19 )
Just being in love is not enough especially when you are considering spending the rest of your life in that condition.
Internet romance is on a real boom swing around the world. Only a few short years ago anyone who “dated” on line was considered an oddity at best. Finding a mate on line seemed like a cute idea but, from a practical standpoint, there weren’t a whole lot of risk takers willing to see if it really worked. That was true for the most part until just the past few years. Now there are literally hundreds of on line dating services popping up all over the place. “Falling in love” with a description and a picture has become for many a way of life and, perhaps, the safest and surest route to romance.
Although estimates are still rather shaky, it has been claimed by some that it is plausible to project that one out of every twenty marriages in the United States in recent years has resulted from some contact with an internet dating service. Projections for the future are even more generous. Finding that love direction has become for many simply a matter of a “click” and a “pop-up” menu.
Unfortunately, finding direction in love has never been an easy thing. And, with the advent of internet dating services, building lasting marriages that start out in the right “direction” from the start hasn’t been easy. Divorce rates are still high in the United States and there is little indication that these will decline. What is it about dating in general and internet dating in specific that so often fails the test of “lasting” romance? Are young couples, especially those engaged in internet courting, really headed in the right direction?
In November, 1975, 75 convicts started digging a secret tunnel designed to bring them up at the other side of the wall of Saltillo Prison in northern Mexico. On April 18, 1976, guided by pure genius, they tunneled up into the nearby courtroom in which many of them had been sentenced. The surprised judges returned all 75 to jail. (Campus Life, September, 1980.)
Unfortunately for many couples today, finding a romantic “direction” has often involved a lot of internet “prep” work filling in descriptive menus and...
