We were diverted and assigned to the Lebanon/Afghanistan Navy/Marine Corps Expeditionary Force. After steaming 7 or 8 weeks with no mail and only roast beef and “C” rations to eat our stuff caught up with us. I received a small box from my wife. In that box I found a small box of blow gum with a note hanging out of it from my daughter, Rebecca. The note said, “I love you Daddy.” Now she knew that I love bubble gum. It was really very special to me. I shared it and we all enjoyed. There was bubble popping all over the place. It sounded like gunfire. I not only bragged about my daughter sending the bubble gum to me but everyone that was there was talking about my daughter and the bubble gum. Some of them came over and picked up her picture on my desk and looked at it. We talked about the bubble gum and my daughter for weeks. And I’m still talking about it. The right gift at the right time and at the right place will never be forgotten.
