In my backyard I have two apple trees. They grow low to the ground and in July the apples are plentiful but small and green. Harvest is not until late September here in Ontario. But the low hanging branches present an enticing temptation to pick the apples.

One beautiful morning I noticed an abundant collection of fallen apples.

I asked our adorable 4-year-old granddaughter what happened.

She quickly replied that her younger brother (age 3) and her much younger sister (17 months) had picked the apples.

“I see. Well, that’s too bad. We really want the apples to remain on the tree until they are red and much larger.”

She looked at me again with her face saying was more to the story.

“Well grandpa, sometimes I pick them too – I don’t want to – but I just do.”

There it was – a theological explanation for picking unripe apples.

Didn’t all of this start with an apple?
