A Contentious Spirit - Speaking Strife
Contributed by Martin Spoelstra on Feb 11, 2025 (message contributor)
Here’s a fun fact: You don’t actually have to correct someone when they’re wrong. Shocking, I know! There’s no official appointment letter naming you Earth’s Guardian of Truth and Accuracy. (If there is, it probably got lost in the mail.) Sometimes, it’s okay to just let it go—yes, even if they think 2+2 equals 5. Let them have their moment; the world will keep spinning.
What is Speaking strife? I guess the best description would be from the THESAURUS. Contentious, belligerent, argumentative, combative, quarrelsome. The Bible has a few things to say about this.
Proverbs 21:9 (NLT)
9 It’s better to live alone in the corner of an attic
than with a quarrelsome wife in a lovely home.
Proverbs 26:21(NLT)
21 A quarrelsome person starts fights
as easily as hot embers light charcoal or fire lights wood.
Do you always have to be right? Do you insist on having the last word, even if it’s just a muttered, “Well, I was still right”? Are you the type who lives for the moment you can say, “I told you so”? Congratulations—you might have a contentious spirit!
