  • Comment to those looking at my sermons: Better heard than read. I hope, anyway...
  • Sermon or series that made a difference: ~My Jonah series was the best series I ever wrote - not online yet. ~I did Colossians verse by verse, which was liberating for me. That’s not online either. ~But my series on Elijah - my favorite character - is online.
  • One of my favorite illustrations: A man walks into his counselor’s office. He sits down and says, "Doc, sometimes I feel like a teepee and sometimes I feel like a wigwam." The doctor looks at him and says, "Well, it’s obvious: you’re two tents..."
  • Family: I was married in 1996 to Michelle and we have 3 boys, aged 13, 11, and 10.
  • What my parents think of my sermons: They’re not Christians yet, but they seem to like it when they hear me.
  • What my spouse (really) thinks of my sermons: She doesn’t like to miss them, and she reminds me when I overstep my bounds. I'm her favourite preacher.
  • Best advice given to me about preaching: Leave them wishing you’d said more instead of wishing you’d said less.
  • Books that have had an impact: Experiencing God, The Heart of Great Pastor, Wild at Heart, Roaring Lambs, The Lord of the Rings, What’s So Amazing About Grace, The Chronicles of Narnia, Blue Like Jazz, Victory Over the Darkness, A New Kind of Christian, Speaking My Mind, anything by Ted Dekker or Frank Peretti.
  • Hobbies: Writing, walking, reading, watching movies, camping, model-building, Cub Scouts, genealogy.
  • If I could Preach one more time, I would say...: Keep the faith. Hang in there.
  • Something funny that happened while preaching: I was leading a study on complaining, showing that grumbling about life is so hurtful to the cause of Christ. I said, "What if you complained about me to others? You know: He can’t preach very well, he certainly can’t sing, he isn’t friendly, he never smiles, he never says hi... What would people think? Would they want to come to church?" One guy said, "And that’s the good stuff we say about you."
  • What I want on my tombstone: He was faithful.

A reworking of one of my previous messages, this time for a New Year's Day emphasis.

Joshua 1:12-18 – Settling into the New Year I heard a story about a college student who once sent a telegram to his parents reading: "Mom – flunked all courses. Kicked out of school. Wasted all money, mine and yours. Prepare Pop." Soon afterwards, Mom sent back a response: ...read more

#14 in series. What kind of qualities does Paul commend? What are we to do with this list? Convert to "checklistianity"?

Colossians 4:7-17 – With Friends Like These Turn with me to the book of Colossians, almost for the last time. Today we are looking at Paul’s list of friends, as found in 4:7-17. Next week we wrap up the book, looking at 4:18, thinking of Paul’s chains, and our own. Today we ...read more

INLETS AND OUTLETS My favourite spot here on Cape Sable Island is the walk from Cat Rock to Clam Point. It’s a beautiful location, quiet and peaceful, and I love meeting God there. But along the way, you will walk by several ponds. Some of the ponds are quite nice. But some of them are not. ...read more

I like the story of a man who walked into a gift shop that sold religious items. Near the cash register he saw a display of caps with "WWJD" printed on all of them. He was puzzled over what the letters could mean, so he asked the clerk. The clerk replied that the letters stood for "What Would Jesus ...read more
