  • Live A Baptized Life

Contributed by Michael Otterstatter on May 12, 2026
     | 59 views

“Quasimodo geniti infantes.” Literally it is translated, “As new-born babies.” That's what we are today! We ask God the Holy Spirit to renew our faith and point us back to our baptism. Today, we are invited to more fully and more faithfully live a baptized life.

“Quasimodo geniti.” Or if we use the full name, it is, “Quasimodo geniti infantes.” No, I am not talking about a famous character from a French novel, that was also made into a Disney movie. Although there is a connection there. That character was named after it. In some Christian traditions ...read more

  • Receive The Proof And Peace That Jesus Lives To Give

Contributed by Michael Otterstatter on Apr 23, 2026
     | 95 views

To bring Thomas back from his doubts to faith Jesus was very direct. “Stop doubting and believe,” Jesus told him. And I suppose we all need Jesus to be just as direct with us this morning. Through His Word and Sacrament, he is saying to us, “Stop doubting and believe.”

The disciple who is literally at the center of our Gospel Lesson for this morning has a famous, some might say infamous, nickname. I am guessing if he had his wish, he would never have been given this nickname, and that it would never be spoken again. The Bible gives this disciple a lesser-known ...read more

  • "Do You Believe This?”

Contributed by Michael Otterstatter on Mar 23, 2026
     | 193 views

“Do you believe this?” What a great question for us to consider from our Savior, Jesus! And I think we can apply that question to several things Jesus said in our Gospel Lesson. But before we nail down our answer to Jesus’ questions let me ask you another question.

There’s a verse in our Gospel Lesson for today that makes me smile a little every time I read it. It takes me back to many years ago when I was serving a congregation in Tulsa, OK. There was an elderly lady in the congregation named Doris—Doris Rudolph. When Teresa and I first arrived at Mt. ...read more

  • We Have A Continuing Debt Of Love

Contributed by Michael Otterstatter on Mar 2, 2026
     | 201 views

With the three basic principles of debt (what we owe, to whom we owe it, and how we pay it) in mind let’s dig into these verses and ask the Holy Spirit to work a change in our Christian life.

It’s a four-letter word. It has become a problem for millions of people. Yet it is hard to live without it. When we are in it we normally try to get out of it. If it becomes unmanageable it can make life miserable—destroying a person’s health, crushing a marriage, and robbing people of hope. ...read more

  • Hear Isaiah’s Advent Call!

Contributed by Michael Otterstatter on Dec 1, 2025
     | 649 views

For our sermon this morning we are invited to hear a message from the Prophet Isaiah in his role as an Advent preacher. Actually, we hear three messages connected to three voices calling out in his prophecy.

They were all Advent preachers. From Moses to Malachi their messages were the same. Repent. Return. Believe. Yes, they delivered their messages in different ways, and at different times. But ultimately, they were the voices of God calling his people to turn away from their sins, return to ...read more

  • Welcome The King Of Glory!

Contributed by Michael Otterstatter on Nov 17, 2025
     | 405 views

As we begin another Advent season let’s turn our thoughts to a portion of God’s Word that will guide us in our preparation for Christmas. Psalm 24 will also provide us with correct expectations for our celebration of Jesus’ birth.

Preparation. Expectation. From today until the “big day” in December those are the two things most of us will be experiencing. If we are adults, we will probably put some time into preparing for Christmas. Maybe we have already invested a few hours in the upcoming holiday. Many of us did that ...read more

  • Model The Faith Of A Former Leper

Contributed by Michael Otterstatter on Oct 4, 2025
    based on 2 ratings

In these verses we have an example of an unnamed person that models "great faith" for us. May God the Holy Spirit work great faith in us through the Gospel Lesson for this Sunday from Luke 17:11-19.

Canton, Ohio. Cleveland, Ohio. Cooperstown, Pennsylvania. Eveleth, Minnesota. What do those four cities have in common? They all have a “Hall of Fame” located in them. Canton, Ohio is the home of the Football Hall of Fame. You will find the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Baseball ...read more

  • Use Your Worldly Wealth Wisely

Contributed by Michael Otterstatter on Aug 29, 2025
     | 367 views

The parable of the dishonest manager leaves us with many unanswered questions. Why did Jesus use the “creative accounting” done by a cheater as the basis for a lesson on managing money and material wealth?

Dynamite. The airplane. Television. The Internet. Those are just a few examples of things that mankind has invented that have been used for good and for evil. Dynamite has allowed people to accomplish great tasks in building, mining, and demolition. Sadly it has also been used as a tool for ...read more

  • Enter Through The Narrow Door!

Contributed by Michael Otterstatter on Aug 26, 2025
    based on 1 rating

In this Gospel Lesson we hear our Savior speak words of warning and encouragement. Jesus said that there is only one way to enter heaven. He said that we should make every effort to: “ENTER THROUGH THE NARROW DOOR”

“How do you get into heaven?” A Sunday school teacher asked that question of her 2nd grade class. It seemed like a simple question for a group of little Lutherans. But no hands went up. Silence. Crickets. The teacher was confident that the students knew the answer, so she waited patiently. ...read more

  • Set Your Heart On Heavenly Treasure

Contributed by Michael Otterstatter on Aug 4, 2025
    based on 1 rating

Jesus warned his followers that they would be tempted to “set their hearts” on things of little value. If they did that they would not “set their hearts” on what is priceless. Jesus used similar words but in reverse to say that what we treasure will be where our heart goes.

In 1799, twelve-year-old Conrad Reed, skipped Sunday School to go fishing. He found a place to fish along Little Meadow Creek on his family’s farm in North Carolina. While standing by the creek, young Conrad saw what he thoughts was a “yellow rock shining in the water.” With some effort he ...read more

  • Run With Perseverance!

Contributed by Michael Otterstatter on Aug 1, 2025
     | 747 views

Today in our sermon we will consider what it takes to overcome adversity and finish our "race" of faith. For the theme of our sermon let’s use just three words from our text. “RUN WITH PERSEVERANCE!”

For four years, Derek Redmond had dreamed of winning the 400 meter sprint at the 1992 Summer Olympics held in Barcelona, Spain. He could see himself standing on the medal platform receiving the gold for his native Great Britain. Derek breezed through the qualifying heats and made it to the medal ...read more

  • Pray Boldly!

Contributed by Michael Otterstatter on Jul 28, 2025
     | 356 views

"Your will be done on earth as in heaven." We may not say the exact words but many of our prayers could be summarized with the words, “please let my will be done.” What's the answer to this paradox of prayer?

“Your will be done on earth as in heaven.” In the prayer we affectionately call the Lord’s Prayer we refer to that phrase as the Third Petition. Remember that a petition is specific request. There are seven petitions in the Lord’s Prayer as we pray it. After addressing God as our Father in ...read more

  • Make The Most Of Our Visits With God

Contributed by Michael Otterstatter on Jul 21, 2025

Abraham and Sarah, and Martha and Mary received the one thing they needed—God’s presence in their lives through his Word. Let’s ask God the Holy Spirit to do the same thing for us today and every day.

God came to visit them. In two of our Scripture readings for this Sunday two pairs of believers hosted God in their homes (well, to be exact one was a tent). Abraham and Sarah welcomed the LORD God who took on a human body to be able to visit them on a personal level. They heard God’s promises ...read more

  • "Lord, Prepare Us For Your Advent”

Contributed by Michael Otterstatter on Feb 3, 2025
     | 582 views

Just as many of us travel during December, Advent reminds us of Jesus' "travel plans" to serve as our Savior. We'll use the Apostle Paul's travel plans to visit the Thessalonians as our guide.

It’s estimated that a record 80 million Americans traveled 50 miles or more over the Thanksgiving Holiday this year. Of course, the majority (a record 71.7 million) of those traveled by car. But today they anticipate that a record-breaking 3 million people will travel by air. Yes, travel plans ...read more

  • Live A Life Of Startling Generosity

Contributed by Michael Otterstatter on Nov 26, 2024
     | 734 views

We need perpetual reminders of God's undeserved love (his grace) for us. The Apostle Paul shows us how we as individuals and we as a congregation can then excel in the grace of giving.

A 6th grade Sunday school teacher was struggling with a lesson. She was preparing to teach a lesson on how Christians manage their material blessings. She knew that when her students were in confirmation class the pastor would share what the Bible says about stewardship of time, talents, ...read more
